The Specifics

GOOD and Purina ONE® beyOnd® believe we can all make a positive difference when it comes to enriching the lives of shelter pets and moving them one step closer to finding forever homes. Purina ONE beyOnd supports a national network of shelters by providing food 24/7/365 for the pets awaiting adoption. And they’re actively partnering with shelters to help change the perception that a shelter pet is anything other than an awesome addition to a family.

There is so much good work going on in animal shelters across the country and we want to recognize it! Join the Shine a Light on a Shelter Challenge and you can win a $10,000 grant for a shelter you think goes above and beyond to make a positive difference.

Describe a story of how a local shelter makes the world a better place, and why that shelter should receive $10,000 to expand their good work. Nominations are open between June 28 and July 30 (noon Pacific Time). From July 30 to August 6 (noon Pacific Time), a panel of judges will select the top 40 submissions. From August 6 to August 20 we’ll open it up to public voting. Rally your colleagues and friends to get behind your effort and join the GOOD community in selecting the winner.

Submission tips:

  • Include a photo or video that represents your shelter. Photos should be in JPG, PNG, or GIF format, at least 570 × 345 pixels and no larger than 10MB. To include a video, use a YouTube URL.
  • Nominate an animal shelter; this organization would be the recipient of the $10,000 grant.
  • Describe the shelter and how they are working to change perceptions and find more homes for shelter animals.
  • If you have any questions, please review these FAQs or send us an email at maker@goodinc.com.

Entries will not be displayed during the submission period. Once the panel of judges selects the top 40 submissions, those will be displayed during the voting period.

Rules & Regulations

  • This Challenge is open for submissions from June 28 noon PT to July 30 noon PT.
  • A panel of judges will select the top 40 submissions.
  • Submissions will be featured on this page and public voting will be open from August 6 to August 20 noon PT.
  • The nominated shelter with the most votes will receive a $10,000 grant.
  • In order to vote, log in with your GOOD account. If you don’t have a GOOD account, it’s free to join. All you need is an email address or a Facebook account to register. You will be emailed a link that you need to click in order to validate your address.

The Virginia Beach SPCA continually works to help find countless domestics their forever homes. While doing so they are constantly reaching out to the community with really fun and educational events. They are also a federally permitted wildlife facility which helps over 1,000 wild animals each year. A huge thank you to the VBSPCA and all of their volunteers and supporters.

Why wasn't Cracker Box Palace included on the list? We have farm animals, but we were told that we still qualified. Purina has farm and horse feeds, so why can't we still be in the running?

If you cannot play fair and cast honest votes, please refrain altogether or be DISQUALIFIED ALTOGETHER!!! We all want our shelter to win, but you must play fair and garner HONEST VOTES.

QUINCY ANIMAL SHELTER in Quincy, Massachusetts - 100% NO KILL volunteer animal shelter... www.quincyanimalshelter.org - this tireless group of volunteers is the most dedicated, warmest and knowledgeable people I've had the pleasure to be associated. An example of their dedication is realized when, a few years ago, an outbreak of ringworm closed the shelter doors for many months. Rather than euthanize every animal in the shelter, the volunteers worked tirelessly around the clock to treat the ringworm at substantial cost. They were rewarded by seeing every animal beat the odds and bounce back to the applause of the public! Way to go!!!

I vote Stickneys small breed rescue. They need new flooring badly. Since puppy mill rescues and the aged dogs she gets are not housebroken it takes a lot to clean up after them. This would go to new flooring for the rescue! So the benefits of this girt to them would last for years and years to come. Please consider them for this gift as you would be making a long lasting impact with your kindness!

The real story here is that Debi Root is not a figure head she truly "works" her animal welfare mission 20 hours a day seven days a week and has been doing so for over 25 years. Her rescue albeit a 501c(3) not for profit organization, continues to operate on a shoestring budget. However the number of lives she saves every year is extraordinary. Over the years 30,000 + have come through her doors and have found their new forever and loving homes. AGAIN this woman doesn't have a staff or even a huge group of volunteers. Yet Debi and SCR continually out perform most well funded more publicly recognizable animal shelters. Debi has traveled and rescued during catastrophic events like Katrina and regularly goes into areas that the National Humane Society's staff would not tread. SCR is a TRUE NO-KILL shelter and Debi has went to great lengths to protect that status. The term is not used to promote a positive response to her organization it's truly a way of life for Debi and her SCR! In addition to her own responsibilities at SCR Debi has recently been called on to consult for her local Humane Society. This happened following corruption was exposed within the board and the director so significant that it nearly closed the agency down. Debi much unlike many others I have met over the years in private rescue ops, Debi was more than willing to assist the failing agency simply to help the animals and to stop the senseless killing that had become prevalent within the organization. The stories of Debi's monumental contributions to animals and their welfare would take me weeks to layout. I simply beg of you to give this small lady a tiny bit of notoriety. Debi a very slight woman who's 48 now has labored so hard over the years that her body is badly broken down. She needs a variety of surgeries, the most critical is major back surgery. Her days are filled with pain and suffering but she continually drives on with her chores and her mission. Debi's 20 hour days are followed by only 4 hours of rest that too has become painfully uncomfortable at this point. Please help me help Debi gather some awareness, I can only hope that out of that would come and offer to help Debi and allow her to find the time to become healthy again. Debi is truly a selfless person that that world should get to know, she sets a standard for caring that those of us who know and love her are simply amazed by this woman. second-chance-rescue.org

I would like to nominate Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary. As many others have written much more eloquently than I am doing here, they simply are some of the most caring, spirited and "can-do" animal lovers I've ever seen. They are tireless in their efforts to help disadvantaged felines and they don't stop just at helping those in their immediate area, they actively campaign for helping others throughout the U.S. by actively using social networking to connect caring people with kitties in need. And I've been so moved by their generosity of spirit, it has helped jumpstart my own individual volunteer efforts, by volunteering at shelters and rescues. And there is a stray kitten living near me who clearly needs a home, and when I get discouraged at unsuccessful efforts to place him in a safe home, I am continually re-inspired by the work of this wonderful group of people to keep trying. The Virginia Beach SPCA works tirelessly to assist domesticated in finding their forever homes. Also, they are a federally permitted wildlife facility which helps over 1,000 wild animals each year. While helping animals is critical to the organization, its mission is "to create a community with an increased capacity for compassion while decreasing tolerance for cruelty." This objective is attained through their State-recognized Humane Education Program which sees 28,000 children annually through substantive programming. I would like to nominate the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem MA. They have this great program where they truly go above and beyond. It is called "Save A Sato" . The program works to bring neglected dogs in Puerto Rico to health and find them homes. I had adopted a chihuahua mix from this shelter years ago and he was the healthiest and sweetest boy. say the Blind Cat Rescue, St Pauls.NC, their hearts are larger than any I have come across and the task they take on they do out of pure love for the cats. This is the last stop for cats that have no where else to go and would probably have been abandoned or were with no hope for their future. Here they have all the love and proper medical care to make their remaining time loving and comfortable. They have won my heart and I have pledged myself to help in every way I can. They are doing a wonderful job and need our help.

I nominate Young at Heart Pet Rescue. They are a no-kill rescue group that rescue senior dogs and cats that would otherwise be put down and provide them shelter until a permanent home can be found. They also provide a sanctuary for those unwanted animals to live out their lives. They are a ray of hope for those less adoptable or wanted pets.

I would like to nominate The Humane Association on Taft Rd. in Liverpool, New York. A small no-kill shelter started by Dr. Bruce Shafiroff MD, and staffed by a host of volunteers, this little bungalow houses cats, dogs, rabbits, and even ferrets, surrendured by those unable to care for their animals in this rerrible economy. They even have a Senior Cat Room, where older cats can be matched up with those who want a more settled kitty, and wouldn't mind adopting a mature cat to live out their days in a fur-ever home with love and care. The Humane Association needs this grant very much for improvements like new washers and dryers to keep the blankets clean, and more food and toys! These are good caring people!

Central Vermont Humane Society Animal Shelter is a facility operated by a thoughtful and loving staff who work wonders in readying "unadoptable" animals for transition to their forever homes. Indelible on my mind is Jackie, a rescue from a puppy farm, who had been bred too often and for too long, not properly nourished and was shown no human affection. With medical attention, nourishing food and loving attention she became the beautiful animal who was ready to spend the rest of her life with the perfect adopters.

im nominating my shelter animal haven rescue & care in monticello ky .we are a new organization that established in feb 2012 we are a no kill shelter and we could use this to get the building renovated so we can have air and heat and will allow us to save more animals from animal control cause he takes them to another shelter and they are put down. plus we could have a classroom where we could educate people the importance of spay and neuter and other related pet information. we could use this to concrete the floor get insulation and make it a nice shelter because we are the only facility in my town

I'm nominating Our Pal's Place in Marietta, GA. They do amazing work giving discarded and abused dogs a second chance at life. Our Pal's place provides food, shelter, training and TLC to rescued dogs in the hopes of finding them loving homes. They have taken in and adopted out over 800 dogs. Among the dogs they have rescued they they have taken in and administered necessary medical attention to dogs who have been shot, bound in wire, brutally neglected and left for dead at county kill shelters. When snow was found he was starving and frightened. Someone had tied his paws together and burned him somehow [they believe it was with chemicals.]. The wonderful people at Paws for the Cause [along with all of the generous people around the world who donated to help pay vet bills] made sure Snow got the medical care he needed. Such a wonderful cat rescue that does so much for our furry friends.

My BFF, Baxter, and I nominate the Midwest Animal ResQ (MARQ) in Lake Lotawana, Missouri. My world and those of more than 700- other families is so much improved thanks to MARQ. After the heart-breaking loss of my 18 year old cat, Turbo, MARQ stepped in by asking my family to foster a kitten, a little black, bow-legged boy with an attitude who talked CONSTANTLY, and followed me from room to room. I was a foster parent, acclimating Baxter to people so he could find a forever home. I was smitten by the kitten – yes, me – a 6’4”, college football player. Baxter touched me and his story, abandoned in an alley during the “hot kitten season”, destined for euthanasia, is one told countless times by MARQ. Needless to say, Baxter found his forever home right here and we are inseparable. I cannot thank MARQ enough for adding me to the roster of individuals and families who have been matched with a “best friend”, a pet without a chance if not for MARQ.

I vote for the Columbus Lowndes Humane Society because in my experience with them, they have done the most they can to provide stray and surrendered animals the best shot at a good home. They work with the local University to provide foster homes until animals are placed in forever homes. They don't restrict searching for these forever homes to the local community. The limitations and lack of effort to search outside the local community results in more animals being euthanized. Columbus Lowndes Humane Society fights for these animals lives. The director, staff, and volunteers are seen throughout the community on holidays, weekends, and special events trying to raise awareness and promote adoption. I have never seen a humane society that worked so much to give pets a new home. My niece and nephew 2 states away are still so very thankful for the love of their dog that CLHS had for adoption.

I would like to nominate Bristol Animal Shelter in Bristol, RI. They are a tiny no-kill shelter whose staff and volunteers do AMAZING things with little funding and a decrepit building. I am voting for the Blind Cat Shelter and Rescue in St. Pauls, NC. They were started in 2005 to answer the need for a safe place for blind cats that were deemed unadoptable by regular shelters and were going to be killed just because they are blind. In 2011 they built a second shelter to answer the need for a safe place for FEL+ & FIV+ cats that were going to be killed just because they test positive for these viruses. I adopted both a blind cat, my sweet Paulwise Gamgee, one of the most loving animals I ever lived with, and a FEL+ sweet-tempered cat-boy, Carly. If it wasn't for a place like Blind Cat Rescue, cats like them would be dead. Blind cats can have a life full of joy and fun, and certainly bring love and joy to their guardians.

Rescue K911 in Camp Hill, Al a home for the homeless, abandoned and abused dogs. Larry and Loraine Weaver moved to Alabama from Florida bought an old farm house on 7 acres and that is when the dogs started showing up at their door steps 14 years ago. After years of paying for everything on their own they became a non profit organization. Now with over 120 dogs and several volunteers to help they are making progress. They need to replace fencing and kennel areas so the winnings would help get this done for their dogs. As a no kill shelter they have a very high vet bill that we volunteers are always raising money for. The dogs come first at Rescue K911. From spaying and neutering to having a heart operation and almost everything in between is what they do for their dogs at Rescue K911. Please vote for Albany Animal Shelter. Our current shelter is an old hog barn full of diseases and is rat infested. We work dilligently to keep it clean and adopt our dogs and cats. We service 4 other small towns. We have no light, no heat, no air, and no proper drainage and sewage system. Our dogs and cats deserve better than this. The roof is rusted, there is mold on the office ceiling, and huge cracks in the concrete floor which harbors hog diseases from year's past, causing illnesses in puppies and seniors. Thank you..

Pen Pals at Dixon Correctional Institue is the best shelter in the state of Louisiana. These loving and compassionate people were the only shelter in a 4 state area that was willing to help me in my time of need. I experienced an accident where I broke my back which left me unable to care for my Rhodesian Ridgeback, Chance. I contacted over 30 shelters/rescues in a 4 state area there were not willing to help by taking in my dog. A friend contacted Pen Pals and they were willing to take Chance in. It was heartbreaking to have to surrender my dog but Pen Pals allowed me to visit him at their shelter. I could tell at my first visit that the staff there loved and cared for Chance as much as I did in my home. He became the mascot of the shelter and was treated like royalty. When he passed away, they contacted me and I could tell how saddened and heart broken at his demise. I later adopted a Jack Russell terrier from this shelter that is the greatest dog ever! Indie has been a great companion and friend and I am thankful that Pen Pals allowed me to become her mom. Pen Pals is more than deserving of this prize as the staff are the St Assissi (the patron saint of animals) here on earth!

Thank Heaven that there is a haven for these poor little souls, that they can spend their lives in safety and security, loved and cared for by generous people devoted to their welfare.Cats are beautiful, deep, and soulful animals; in my life, I was blessed with eight of the most wonderful feline friends. Although they are long gone, in their memory I will work to make sure that other cats will enjoy the same serene lives that they experienced. Mercifully, they were not handicapped, but these poor little babies are. That is why I am nominating the Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary - so that there will always be a place where those creatures who cannot take of themselves can be helped who are dedicated to making their lives as happy and as comfortable as possible.. Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary of North Carolina. I can't believe how much Alana has changed my life. I have always been a lover of animals, particularly cats, but she has kept the spirit of ALL cats in the Facebook conscience in the most affable, empathetic, extraordinary way. Her daily postings of the blind or fel/hiv cats are so cheerful, the videos of the cats playing with new toys, the photos of volunteers enjoying a day with the cats, the say she captures the spirit and soul of the cats ... these are cats that some people don't think are worthy of adopting, and Alana has given them forever homes with her and her staff and volunteers. Every time I look at one of her Facebook posts, I am moved to tears. I know what it is to have a pet look at me tentatively, reach out a shy paw, and suddenly relax entirely in my arms, grateful for the love, warmth, and safety. All animals deserve that. I am currently living in Europe, but I foster one of Alana's blind kitties, and when I adopted a cat here in the Czech Republic, I took one with one blind eye. He is a perfect cat ... fur, naughtiness, and love and kisses. I thank Alana for showing me that we don't have to look for a pure breed or a trophy cat. We have to look for an animal who needs us the most, and we will find that we also need that animal the most. When I return to the US for a visit I am hoping to spend some time in NC so I can volunteer at Blind Cat and get to know Alana. There is so much more I can write about, but I think you get the gist ... Alana and the Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary are eminently worthy of this grant. Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary. This shelter and sanctuary have completely turned my views on animals around. I was simply a Security Officer with a pretty hard face until their Facebook updates came through to me one day and now my attitude has completely changed. They deserve the funding for being able to change ones attitude to animals that are forgotten about, dumped, abandoned and let down, as well as those whose owners aren't in a position to cater for their needs any more. Seeing what they do on an hourly basis via Facebook is pretty amazing and shows that they're making a good effort to do right by these animals. Even when there is "No Room At The Inn", they keep calm and carry on, whilst fighting tooth and nail to accomodate. A truly excellent cause that I hope wins this competition and the publicity to keep on going.

I would like to nominate Animal House Shelter In Huntley, IL. They are a NO-KILL shelter. Animal House Shelter is a non-profit, 501(c)3, no kill shelter for all breeds of dogs and cats. Founded in June 2002, AHS takes in and cares for abused, neglected and abandoned animals — especially those scheduled for euthanasia at other shelters. Once rehabilitated and ready, they are carefully matched with prospective adopters and placed in loving homes. Over 20,000 pets have been adopted from Animal House Shelter. Like people, animals have distinct personalities that make them unique. At Animal House Shelter, we are proud to say that the dogs and cats are treated like our own. We care enough to be certain they are treated with the comfort and respect that they deserve and we make every effort to ensure that they go to the right, forever, permanent, loving home. The best possible veterinary care is always given to Animal House Shelter pets and treatment is never declined if it will give the animal a chance for a healthy life. Socializing and keeping our pets happy is also of utmost importance. Blind Cat Rescue are easily among the most special people I have ever come across in the animal rescue community nation wide. I have found in my own rescue experience that cats with any health problems what so ever are next to impossible to find homes for. Blind Cat Rescue have made it their mission to dedicate all their time and money to helping these special kitty's. I vote for them because I can think of no one else who would make better use of the prize money.

Fingers crossed for Second Chance Animal Shelter in East Brookfield MA ( www.secondchanceanimals.org ) The objective of this shelter is to change the face of sheltering and show that shelters can be wonderful resources for the community. The focus of the shelter is to keep pets out of shelters through education, training, low cost spay/neuter, pet food pantry and more. The shelter spends a lot of money on preventative programs so if the shelter wins the prize, it will go to keeping pets out of shelters, and healthy and safe in loving homes :) This is a wonderful contest/program to help raise awareness of what shelters do!!!

I nominate St. Tammany Humane Society in Covington, LA. They are Louisiana's largest no-kill shelter. They take in an abundance of homeless animals everday, yet they find homes for the majority of these babies. Being that there was a population boom here after Hurricane Katrina, they have never missed a beat in doing good for these animals. They have community fundraisers all the time, and the community is more than glad to help out such a great cause. I commend everyone who works there for their countless hours given to make this world a better place and a no-kill nation!

It is my pleasure to nominate Fat Kitty City in El Dorado Hills, CA. This absolutely amazing organization did not give up on my friend, Pewter, and likewise, I will always show my support to them. Pewter is a 2 year old cat, FIV+ and could only go to a single-cat home. Because of his age and the fact that he is a special-needs kitty, he was almost un-adoptable. I was introduced to Fat Kitty City by a dedicated and passionate volunteer, Chelsea Kopp. So much attention is given to the care of the cats in their sanctuary that the personalities of each cat is known. Armed with that knowledge, Chelsea was able to take me and my roommate through the sanctuary and introduce us to all the cats that had a personality that would fit our living arrangements, our schedules, and even our own personalities! My new friend has quickly become an irreplaceable family member, and we are so delighted to know that he is adjusted, happy and healthy. I am so impressed that the people that volunteer and staff Fat Kitty City could give so much time and attention to these cats that each of their personalities were known! And to be able to use that knowledge to pair each cat with a family that suits the cat is beyond incredible!!! And as if that was not enough, both volunteer and staff helped us navigate the necessary adoption paperwork. AND IT DOESN'T STOP THERE!!! They gave me all the relevant information to care for my special needs kitty! AND IT STILL DOESN'T STOP THERE! They helped, and still help, me find the most affordable pet supplies, and provided me with coupons, as well as product recommendations, such as brushes, litters, litter boxes, and toys. I have developed a friendship with Chelsea Kopp, who helped us find our missing family member. And even now, she still checks in from time to time to make sure Pewter is happy and in good health. Impressed does not do justice to the mountain of dedication that Fat Kitty City has for the welfare of the animals in their care. Please vote for Fat Kitty City of El Dorado Hills! Help them save as many cats as possible, and to help them find loving, amazing homes.

I would love to see Carols Ferals in Michigan have the opportunity to put that $ 10,000.00 to use. I was introduced to them when I emailed Michigan States Vet program asking for help with a cat overpopulation problem. We purchased a farm in Michigan's thumb area - it came with 2 "barn cats", over the years I have paid to have 8 fixed but I am still up to approximately 30 ! I have not been able to find any help locally and some of the suggestions have been heart breaking! Mi State refereed me to Carols Ferals in hopes they could find me some help. Even though Carols Ferals are almost 100 miles away they have offered to help me get these cats spayed and neutered to stop the population explosion ! This problem is becoming way too common - people see a barn and think their unwanted kittens will just melt into the crowd - problem being those 5 cats start multiplying!! Please help Carol make a difference with spay/neuter and release program. It breaks my heart to think of the other alternative I have to control these kitties !! PLEASE VOTE TO SAVE THEM !

I nominate Fat Kitty City in El Dorado Hills, CA. They are a wonderful organization dedicated to the care of all animals. The sanctuary itself is gorgeous and allows the kitties room to roam freely. They not only take part in fostering and adopting the cats, but offer lifelong refuge for unadoptable pets. The medical care they offer is nothing but the best. When an old starving cat wandered to my house, I wanted desperately to help her, but being a young adult just starting out, I was unable to pay for the care she needed. Within 24 hours of calling Fat Kitty City, I had an appointment to have kitty get all the care she needs. They are so kind and generous!! Their hard work, dedication and passion for all animals make them a foundation I am proud to support and educate others on! Fat kitty city should be seriously considered for the grant!!!

I nominate Fat Kitty City in El Dorado Hill, California. They are the only cat sanctuary in Northern California. Not only do the cats and kittens get medical attention and preventative care, they have lots of room to roam! I have never seen anything like this before. If the cats don't get adopted, they live out their lives in the sanctuary...a loving and clean environment. I hope you will give serious consideration to giving Fat Kitty City the $10,000 grant. They are very deserving.

I nominate Midwest Animal ResQ (MARQ) in Lake Lotawana, MIssouri. Through their foster and adoption network, they have been able to help save numerous lives. I work with one of the local Kansas City metro city shelters (it isn't a high-kill shelter, but they do euthanize adoptable dogs) to help them save adoptable dogs that are on their "kill list" and MARQ has helped me save many this last year, including an emanciated Redbone Coonhound (who is now thriving in his forever home) and a large Olde English Bulldog who had such bad skin infections and mange (and who is also being spoiled in his new forever home). Erin Morse, who runs the organization, doesn't turn a dog away when she has a spot - and sometimes makes a spot happen when one wasn't there. Sometimes I swear they work magic and miracles. It doesn't matter if the dog is big, little, or has medical issues - they help find a solution and warm bed. They don't have the "this can't be done" attitude, they have the "let's see what we can do to make this happen" attitude - no matter the situation. I highly recommend Midwest Animal ResQ for the $10,000 grant.

I also nominate Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR), a non-kill shelter in Brooklyn, NY. They have an excellent staff which consist of many animal loving volunteers. The dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, birds and exotic animals are well-maintained, cared for and loved. Any animal that arrives at SCAR has been checked by a vet. Some of the pets are "special needs" animals and those special needs are always disclosed to prospective adopters. Sean Casey and his staff's work is outstanding to a point that they've been featured on several local TV news programs in newspapers. They don't believe in putting down an animal just because he/she has been residing at the shelter for an extended length of time. Like most shelters, SCAR relies on donations from money to food, even newspaper for the cages and toys for the animals to play with. I can't think of another shelter more worthy of the $10,000 grant.

I nominate Sean Casey Animal Rescue. I have found all types of wildlife- feral cats, birds, etc. and NYC doesn't have any widlife rehabilitation facilities open to the public to drop off these injured or orphaned creatures. When I call the City's 311 line, they give me Sean Casey's number. When I called the Jamaica Bay Wiidlife Refuge for help, they give me Sean Casey's number. When I need to drop off an animal, he waits until I get there, after 8 p.m. at night. When I visited his shelter to check out adopting a cat, he and his workers were there at 11 p.m. on a Saturday night medicating all the animals that needed to have treatment at that time of day. This guy should be on the city's payroll and the city should be funding his organization since he makes the quality of life so much higher for animals and the stressed out people trying to help them who have no where else to turn. Given that he is not, nor is his organization being funded by the city, I highly recommend you award this grant to Sean Casey Animal Rescue.

I nominate New York City Rescued Kitties, a small feline rescue group with a huge heart located in the lower eastside of Manhattan. I have worked as a volunteer and fundraiser along with adopting 3 wonderful fur boys from the group over the past 8 years. The founder has dedicated her life and meager resources for well over a decade depending on the kindness of strangers through donations and volunteers to operate. With a no-kill policy, strict adoption process and followup, these cats stay adopted in happy forever homes. It's a constant struggle here for the tireless and mostly invisible non city or corporate funded groups and the grant would literally be a huge lifesaver.

I would like to nominate Buddy Dog Humane Society in Sudbury,Ma. They are THE most caring shelter i have ever encountered. I had to surrender a dog that i had adopted from a client of mine to them as the dog did not like children. If i had brought him ANYWHERE else, he would have been put to sleep. Instead, they took him into their no kill shelter and found him a suitable, forever home!! I was devastated when i had to give him up, but they made the process so much easier for us and for him!! They are an UNBELIEVABLE place that i would give $10,000 to myself if i had it!!

I would like to nominate Brother Wolf in Asheville, NC. They are a no kill shelter & they work very hard to get as many dogs & cats into homes. They started out in a very small place in the middle of no where & have worked very hard to get a bigger place to call their own. I have given many donations to the shelter & see how much work they have done for homeless animals. I would love to see all their hard work & love rewarded.

I would like to nominate Good Karma Rescue in E. Montpelier, Vermont. Every year, they save many, many dogs and puppies from being euthanized in high-kill shelters in the southern United States. This group is extremely diligent about making good matches between dogs and their new homes. Before the dogs are available for adoption, they are kept at foster homes and assessed for personality, friendliness to various species (human, cat, dog, etc.), and for basic skills and house manners. The dogs are given lots of socialization and, if needed, basic training, to improve the ease of their transition into a new household. Prospective adopters are also screened through an application and home visit. Good Karma Rescue also does good work in educating the public on rescue animals and humane treatment of animals. This great organization is run by volunteers and funded by donations and adoption fees. My husband and I adopted our wonderful, adorable little Ernie from Good Karma.

They also find good homes for many of the cats as well. This grant would be incredibly helpful to the kind, loving folks who have dedicated their lives to helping the cats.

I volunteer at the Quincy Animal Shelter, in Quincy, MA. We are funded by donations and could always use a helping paw. We are a no kill shelter and have over 50 volunteers...maybe 100! I am a rookie volunteer but whenever I go in, I feel the love. This is an awesome shelter, so I nominate it!!

We've volunteered with them in the past & adopted through them. They're creative and epitomize "proactive" with their weekly showings.

I woulld like to nominate PETS WITHOUT PARENTS IN SEVIIERVILLE,TN. It is like a shelter but is funded souly by donations and a very good place to adopt a pet...they run on donaations and have many healthy animals, at one time they had a building full and some one in a truck pulled in and unloaded 70 dogs on them and left ,did not come into to talk to the owner or anything,...these animals have had shots,been spayed or neutered and well loved...we have got 4 animals from there and no problems....they sometimes even have thoroughbreds and registered animals..this is a place that truly has to have donations to keep their doors open tp house the animals...PLEASE HELP
