Shelter Website

What makes this shelter great?

Dogs for the Deaf pairs extraordinary dogs with people who have a variety of disabilities and challenges. We believe that every dog has value and every person should have the opportunity to feel safe and be independent regardless of their physical or sensory challenges. Our dogs are rescued, specially trained at our shelter for four to six months, and placed free of charge with clients all across the U.S. and Canada. Dogs for the Deaf provides lifetime support for every partnership we form and a lifetime commitment to each dog we rescue. In addition to Hearing Dogs, we also train dogs for children on the autism spectrum and professionals, such as teachers and doctors, who work with people with disabilities.

Congratulations to Dogs for the Deaf. I have not read most comments here since they are, by far, stupid. That is, the same people keep posting and clogged up the contest. I am most unhappy with the moderators who did virtually NOTHING to stop it. My shelter was nominated and did not win and I am OK with that, as Dogs for the Deaf is a very worthy organization and I heart-warmingly applaud you for everything you have done and continue to do. Purina...try moderating this contest next time and BAN those who abuse the privilege and give the rest of us a break! Thank you! P.S. Yes, we do read these comments.

Dear CharmaINe and coharts. It is such a shame that you are giving DOGS FOR DEAF a bad name.with all of this unprofessional behavior. yOU ARE MAKING THEM APPEAR AS THOUGH THEY ARE MORE INTERESTED IN BLOGGING AND STATUS RATHER THAN HELPING OUR ABANDONED ANIMALS. i HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE; AT THIS POINT i AM AN INDEPENDENT INDIVIDUAL NOT REPRESENTING ANYONE IN PARTICULAR. YOU ARE MAKING THE DOGS FOR DEAF LOOK BAD. SHAME ON YOU, CHILDREN. PS. Do you tthink that anyone adtually reads these comments?

As I've said it once, and I will say it again, I am amazed how you were able to get so many people to vote around 10:30 at night? Could this be a marketing approach that costs money to do? Don't believe for an instant that enough people at this time of night are actually voting on a winning shelter "on their own-" just surfing the internet and trying to decide for whom to vote. Quite obvious the way you operate - votes not based on who deserves the winning rank but how many people you know. I am so ashamed of your organization. It will come to haunt you! A real disgrace to your shelter! . Shame on you! Betty White and others will definitely get some "tweets" about this"

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water. He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?” The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.” The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.” Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young man, do you not realise that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!” The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.” by DogsMumm about 7 hours ago |Reply You really missed the point, DOGS MUMM. Two dogs at a time is NOT a real shelter. A real shelter gets 20-30 dogs a month, not two at a time. Then what they do with all of these pets which does not include guinea pigs, rabbits, and cats!!! Where does the shelter put these animals???? Two dogs at a time will not "cut the mustard." They will try to place as many pets as they can, but when the "inn is too full" and not enough funds to house them all --the pets, unfortunately, will be euthanized. Sad, but true. These people spend every day, with several dogs at a time trying to teach them to be a assistant dog. Have you ever seen or tried to do that? It takes a lot of work, time and a lot of patients. You said previously that you only spend a few hours on Saturdays helping at the local shelter? I don't think you should have the authority to be condoning this shelter for only taking in dogs, and only rescuing a few at a time. And if you really think these people have never been to a kill shelter, you’ve got to be naive or something. Don’t you think the reason they might have started this is to help special dogs help people in need?? And you keep asking what they do with the dogs they can’t train. Maurice has said several times now that they go to their regular adoption and get adopted out to people who don’t need help. I am not affiliated with Dog for the Deaf whatsoever, I just do not like seeing people pick on other shelters because they aren’t doing as much as someone else. If they’re doing what they can, then that’s all that counts. Just because it’s one or two dogs at a time, they’re still being saved! If you really care about animals, then I would stop making your shelter look like fools. But if you just like to start drama, then go do it somewhere else. Dogs for the Deaf never did anything to you and you just started attacking them out of nowhere. There will always be another contest. Think of it this way, if they win this time, they can’t win again. They deserve the money just as much as any other shelter. If it was my way all the shelters would win. But it’s up to the public’s vote. You can’t condone them for your shelter’s lack of support. Hopefully you will take this to heart and realize there is no need to bash and attack another shelter just because they are in the lead. Sure your shelter may need money too, but they all do! If Dogs for the Deaf win, they’re going to use it to save animals just the way your shelter would. So please, you are causing unneeded stress and it just makes you and your shelter look like fools for harassing and attacking another shelter. It’s unnecessary and very rude! Thanks! by npendry about 7 hours ago |Reply Also!! I'm not sure if you actually took the time to look at their website, but any money the spend on the dogs, they NEVER get back. For each adoption they only ever make a profit of $50. Here's what it says on their website under cost:There is a $50.00 application fee. When an applicant has been approved to receive a Hearing Dog and is ready to be placed on the waiting list, we require a $500.00 Good Faith deposit, which is returned after the person and the Hearing Dog have been together for one year. Once the dog is placed with a person, the client is financially responsible for the on-going care of the dog. I bet your shelter charges at least $200 for a dog. by npendry about 7 hours ago |Reply Yes, I did take the time to look at their website. I do not write anything that I have not researched. The dogs at our shelter are adopted for $20-$40, sometimes for free. But did you read my comments about our shelter - one of the foster parents takes in the cats, sometimes 23 at a time, and then buys her own food for them and pays for a huge majority of their shots, spaying/neutering, and also blood work? I feel that this goes well beyond what one is expected to do. Why would you think that other shelter get back money they spend on the dogs? Does it sound like they do, as I just blogged above? Why is no one listening to the facts? No, we do NOT CHARGE $200 FOR A DOG!!! Why would they do that when the dog now has a new home? If the animal were to get sick after the dog is at his new home, the new owner is then responsble for any maintenance. I don't understand what this $200 is? Organizations such as yours should be ashamed of "stealing" (now that is MY word) money from the "true shelters." I noticed most of the comments posted below are from your organization. I am a totally unofficial bystander who has no affiliation to any of the shelters other than my own. I feel so strongly about this that I gave up my chance to win to help a shelter who really needs the money. I do not even work at a shelter, but I donate a few hours on Saturdays to help the pets at our branch. That's all! No one ever answered my previous question. You said that you pair up "extraordinary" dogs with people who are disadvantaged in some way. What do you with your dogs who are 11 years old? Where do you take them, as they are obviously too old to train for such an important job as this. It is so easy for you to say that people are bashing your organization when you are winning. But seriously, if you are so altruistic as you say, to ALL of the shelters, would you be willing to give a thousand dollars to at least one or two of the shelters who rank directly below you? Before YOU bash others who feel very strongly about this contest, please, please, please visit a shelter of lower income, say a kill shelter? Of course, these types of shelters do not want to be a kill shelter, but they do not have the funds to do otherwise. Seriously, please visit a shelter such as this. Some shelters have three pets together in one cage, some shelters have to "put down" many dogs and cats daily because of lack of space due to lack of funds. I am just so disappointed that you feel slighted even when you are winning. If you were really "true to your cause," you wouldn't even have to reply to others' comments. Last comment - are you really considered a "shelter?" Doesn't a shelter take all breeds, of different types of pets (including guinea pigs and rabbits, etc.) of all ages? DO YOU DO THIS? SO SO SAD. But PLEASE visit a a regular shelter! I know you would feel as strongly as I do as seen from the eyes of an outsider looking in. by mpertuit2003 about 16 hours ago |Reply by mpertuit2003 about 7 hours ago |Reply Maurice Vaughn, I am so impressed that you have rescued two black labs recently. Did you know that regular shelters rescue so many more pets on a regular basis? At our branch, we must get 5-6 felines in a week who have been rescued from being euthuanized at a kill shelter. Our director takes them home, to her house or to another foster home .These volunteerrs personally pay for their shots, their neutering, and blood work before they are put in one of the adoption braches. Our director has been known to have 12 bottle babies rescued as newborns (she must get up every 2 hours to feed them an ounce of formula), plus she has another 13 felines in her foster home until they are ready for the adoption branch. They are at her house. If she doesn't take them from kill shelter, most of them would be put down.THIS IS TRUE DEDICATION! At this branch, this past week they also had ADOPTION WEEK for rabbits, none of them being extraordinary. You still haven't told me what you do when an 11 year old canine comes into your shelter? is he then sent to another shelter because he doesn't fit into your program. Most likely, yes. THIS IS WHY I AM SAYING YOU DO NOT QUALIFY BEING IN THIS CONTEST. YOU SHOULD GIVE THE SHELTERS WHO ARE IN DIRE FINANACIAL NEED A CHANCE TO BRING SUCCESS TO THEIR PROGRAMS, TOO. APPEARS THAT YOU ARE ALREADY FINANCIALLY SOUND! Would you be willing for shelter #2 and #3 to receive a portion of your earnings if you win? That would definitely show those involved that you truly have shelters in your best interest, not just the money and publicity. If you were to give these two other shelters a percentage ij your winnings, I would be more than willing to post anything positive about your "shelter." PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE VISIT A REGULAR SHELTER IN YOUR AREA - A KILL SHELTER. YOU WILL MOST DEFINITELY BE VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS AS I TRULY AM. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT I HAVE ANOTHER FULL TIME PROFESSIONAL JOB AND ONLY VOLUNTEER ON SATURDAY'S OF MY OWN ACCORD TO HELP OUT. DID YOU READ MY ORIGINAL ENTRY WHERE I MENTIONED THAT ABOUT A MONTH AGO WE HAD TO PUT DOWN ALL OF OUR FELINES IN OUR BRANCE DUE TO A CONTAGIOUS DISEASE. THINK HOW YOU WOULD FEEL IF YOU HAD TO DO THIS AT YOUR ESTABLISHMENT. THINK OF SOME OF THE DOGS THAT ALL OF YOU HAVE BONDED WITH AND HOW YOU WOULD FEEL IF YOU HAD TO PUT THEM DOWN. iT'S TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT THE ANIMALS AGAIN AND NOT THIS CONTEST. by mpertuit2003 about 8 hours ago |Reply Check out ISF sanctuary at http://t.co/c2lXpiFF by katiejohnston01 about 11 hours ago |Reply Check out ISF sanctuary at http://t.co/c2lXpiFF by katiejohnston01 about 11 hours ago |Reply As we visit shelters throughout the western states to rescue dogs it does break our hearts that we can’t rescue them all. I know you would feel as strongly as I do as seen from the eyes of an outsider looking in. by mpertuit2003 about 16 hours ago |Reply by mpertuit2003 about 12 hours ago |Reply Marge, there is a difference between opinion and slander. People can find factual. accurate, and non-slanderous information about Dogs for the Deaf on our website www.DogsForTheDeaf.org and accurate financial information on all shelters at www.guidestar.com It’s free and you will get real information on all organizations via IRS info. by santa.tammaneus about 11 hours ago |Reply So Santa, did YOU check the statistics on line??? My information is accurate. I have checked out this information. I repeat, have you been to a real "shelter", let's say a kill shelter. You, too, are in the clouds! Get a grip on what is going on. Stated fact-- this shelter, yes, does good things, but for a select of "extraordinary" dogs (not cats, guinea pigs, cats, and other animals that need help. what do you with these animals? It is a KNOWN fact that you only work with a certain percentage of abandoned animals. THIS IS NOT A REAL SHELTER!!! WHY CAN'T YOU ALL GET THIS THROUGH YOUR MINDS? GREED HAS GONE TO YOUR HEADS AND ONLY ABOUT WINNING! SINCE YOU NEVER SEE THESE OTHER ANIMALS, HOW CAN YOU CALL YOURSELF A SHELTER? WHY DO YOU CONTINUE TO GET INTHIS DISCOURSE WITH ME IF YOU ARE TRUE TO YOURSELF AND BELIEVE IN WHAT YOU ARE DOING? IS IT BECAUSE YOU KNOW I SPEAK SOME TRUTH? i am asking everyone at your establishment to visit a REAL shelter - even a kill shelter. You would be totally aghast at these shelters. They are the ones who truly need this money in order to house all of their animals so they DON"T have to enthanize them. Did you know that some shelter have to put three dogs in a cage and euthanize many, many pets daily? OF COURSE YOU NEVER SEE WHAT REALLY GOES ON BEHIND A REAL SHELTER. PLEASE STOP QUOTING PLACES WHERE TO LOOK UP REAL INFORMATION. THIS IS JUST A GUISE FOR THE TRUTH.THIS IS OPINION. SANTA, THIS IS OPINION , NOT SLANDER. IF IT NOT THE TRUTH, WHY DO YOU KEEP DEFENDING YOUR STANCE? As I've said it once, and I will say it again, I am amazed how you were able to get so many people to vote around 10:30 at night? Could this be a marketing approach that costs money to do? Don't believe for an instant that enough people at this time of night are actually voting on a winning shelter "on their own-" just surfing the internet and trying to decide for whom to vote. Quite obvious the way you operate - votes not based on who deserves the winning rank but how many people you know. I am so ashamed of your organization. It will come to haunt you! A real disgrace to your shelter! . Shame on you! Betty White and others will definitely get some "tweets" about this" by mpertuit2003 less by mpertuit2003 1 minute ago |Reply

I love that this is an international organization, and also that they help with adoption should the dog not make it through training. It is an invaluable service, and there should be more like it.

While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”

You really missed the point, DOGS MUMM. This is the reality of the shelters.

mperuit2003, If you really care so much about saving the animals, then why don't you stop bashing other shelters and go save them yourself. Thanks!

Also!!

Yes, I did take the time to look at their website. Clearly we are talking about two different kinds of shelters? Do you think all shelters do this? Again, as I have said on numerous occasions, do some of these people REALLY UNDERSTAND HOW A REAL SHELTER OPERATES? iT seems we are comparing apples to oranges. A regular shelter Never gets back money they spend on the dogs. AS I PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED, SO MANY TIMES THE FOSTER PARENT PAYS FOR EXPENSES OUT OF POCKET. $200??? HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

by vaughn.maurice about 15 hours ago |Reply So if you want all of the shelters to grow, (as you mentioned below) would you be willing to share the profits of this contest???You already have a $13 million budget. I know you would feel as strongly as I do as seen from the eyes of an outsider looking in. by mpertuit2003 about 16 hours ago |Reply

Maurice Vaughn, I am so impressed that you have rescued two black labs recently.

As we visit shelters throughout the western states to rescue dogs it does break our hearts that we can’t rescue them all. Knowing that nearly 5 million dogs and cats will be euthanized in America this year alone breaks our hearts. But knowing that we make a difference in the lives of the dogs that we do rescue and the people that we do help is an awesome feeling. A few days ago we took in two Black Lab mixes. We’ll have them as we train them for the next 4 to 6 months. If they successfully pass training as assistance dogs they will be placed to help people who desperately need assistance. If they don’t pass they will go into our adoption program and we’ll find them a great home. In either case we will make certain they are taken care of for the remainder of their lives. We’re sure that these dogs prefer being in our program over possibly being euthanized. We’re sure that the thousands of dogs we’ve rescued over the years are very grateful that we rescued them. The people whose lives benefited by receiving assistance dogs are extremely appreciative that we were able to place an assistance dog with them. Yes we work hard and are successful. Our success allows us to rescue dogs and help people. We don’t pay celebrities but we do ask them for help and many do help. Their help allows us to rescue dogs and help people. Every organization in this contest could use $10,000 to help more animals. Our budget places us as the 8th largest organization in this contest. You won’t see us bashing the organizations who have significantly larger budgets then we have. They, as all the groups in this contest do great work. It truly is sad to see hateful comments, distortions and lies about our organization. 5 million animals will be euthanized in America this year. We need every shelter to be more successful in the work we do. This contest shouldn’t be about bashing the great work of each other but about gaining public support so that we can all grow. We need every shelter to be more successful in the work we do. This contest shouldn’t be about bashing the great work of each other but about gaining public support so that we can all grow. To learn the truth about the work of Dogs for the Deaf please visit our website www.DogsForTheDeaf.org and to learn about the financials of all the organizations in this contest please visit www.guidestar.org.

by vaughn.maurice about 15 hours ago |Reply So if you want all of the shelters to grow, (as you mentioned below) would you be willing to share the profits of this contest???You already have a $13 million budget. I know you would feel as strongly as I do as seen from the eyes of an outsider looking in. by mpertuit2003 about 16 hours ago |Reply

So Santa, did YOU check the statistics on line??? YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO!!!

To learn the truth about the work of Dogs for the Deaf please visit our website www.DogsForTheDeaf.org and to learn about the financials of all the organizations in this contest please visit www.guidestar.org.

I’m sure that the thousands of dogs that Dogs for the Deaf has rescued over the years are very grateful to have been rescued and not euthanized. The people whose lives benefited by receiving assistance dogs are extremely appreciative that we were able to place an assistance dog with them. Dogs for the Deaf works hard and they are successful. Success allows DFD to rescue dogs and help people. One of the great things about DFD is they have an endowment that covers all administrative expenses so that 100% of funds raised goes directly to rescue dogs and help people. It truly is sad to see hateful comments. 5 million animals will be euthanized in America this year. We need every shelter to be more successful in the work we do. This contest shouldn’t be about bashing the great work of each other but about gaining public support so that we can all grow. To learn the truth about the work of Dogs for the Deaf please visit website www.DogsForTheDeaf.org and to learn about the financials of all the organizations in this contest please visit www.guidestar.org.

Wow, it must be nice to have famous people to sponser you and all kinds of grant money coming in for the dissabeled people who benefit from this. Thanks for taking money out of the hands/paws of so many shelters who can't afford to buy dog food every week , who regualry run out of cat litter and have to purchase it out of pocket or go with out . It's nice to see that you have a 13 million net worth but are willing to take this grant money from the places that really need it. Way to go guys . Hope you keep padding the votes so the rest of the broke shelters can watch you continue to thrive .
