The Louisiana SPCA handles the most heartbreaking cases of a different kind of racism: hatred of pit bulls. The LASPCA gives pit bulls a second chance, and sees them as the kind, loving, and wonderful dogs they are when treated properly. Most shelters will just see a Pit and put it down, but the LASPCA is different. In New Orleans, where the amount of wanted and unwanted pit bulls is a serious issue, the LASPCA is one of our only hopes. LASPCA made the world better for Vaughn, an emaciated Pit Bull licking the remnants of Chinese takeout in the gutter while cars honked and swerved. I was the only car that stopped. He curled up on my front seat instantly. After all the obvious neglect, to simply trust another human like that was incredible. With strikes against him and months on the run, he would not be given another chance at any other shelter. However, I had no doubt that the LASPCA would do the best for him and now, Vaughn is safe and happy and finally, in a forever home.
