The Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS), a No-Kill animal welfare and education center located in northeast Florida, turned a vacant building they owned into a neonatal nursery, saving the lives of approximately 400 kittens who would have been euthanized in prior years because they were too young or sick for adoption. First Coast No More Homeless Pets, another local animal welfare organization, helped fund the program that was staffed and managed by JHS. Because of the great publicity surrounding the neonatal nursery, people are flocking to JHS to adopt kittens. The media coverage has even helped increase adoptions of cats, dogs and puppies while encouraging people to spay and neuter their pets. More people have come forward to volunteer because of the success of the nursery. JHS should receive this grant to offset the costs of next year’s program to ensure JHS saves the lives of hundreds of underage and sick kittens in Jacksonville again next year.
