Kirby Animal shelter

The animal shelter in the city of Kirby has 18 dog kennels and 23 cat cages. The facility is run by one lady who has 1 part time assistant and a handful of shelter volunteers. She started working for the city in June of last year with a goal, a smile and a can do attitude. Now a year later I still see her smile, but not as often and her can do attitude seems to be drowning in a never ending ocean of cats and dogs. In one year of working for the city she has saved over 800 dogs and cats. With only the 16 dog and 23 cat kennels it has been quite the magic trick. She works with surrounding shelters to try and save as many animals as she can but sometimes I can see it in her face that she is struggling to keep control of herself and her shelter. In this whole year not one single animal was put down for space reasons and that is a magic trick in it self. Her name is Christi, she is an angel. She is a kind and patient person with a heart of gold. This grant would save lives and her sanity.

Although I have only worked with Christie once or twice, it doesn't take long to see her passion for these precious dogs and cats. Someone like this who cares so much about these little guys deserves this opportunity! I'm rooting for you Kirby~!

I have had several days (including today) when I have logged on to vote and the option is there to vote for any shelter except Kirby. Is there a limit to how many times you can vote for one particular shelter? I thought you could vote daily. I have refreshed, rebooted and even clicked through every shelter. Anyone know why this is happening?

If more animal shelters were run by folks who care as much as Christie cares, we could save so many more animals!! It'd certainly be easier for her as an animal control officer, to euthanize when too many animals come along needing her help, but instead she'll go WAY above and beyond to find them homes or find a rescue group to take them in. She's been at KAS for 14 months, and not a SINGLE animal has been put down for lack of space, not a single one. This proves it CAN be done, but it takes dedication and a heart of gold, both of which Christie has. I volunteer with her at the shelter's low cost pet vaccine drives, and I'm honored for the opportunity to be even a small part of something so wonderful. I assure you, every dime of the grant, should KAS win it, would go to better the lives of the animals who pass through the shelter on their way to a forever home.

Do not know if I can add to the already wonderful comments that have been posted so far, but I can personally testify to the focus and determination that Christie has on her mission to save the Kirby animals. Finding rescues or homes for old and special needs animals that no other city shelter would bother with. Making space for animals where there is no space. Tirelessly organizing fund raising events to pay for veterinarian expenses for the special needs animals that are not budgeted for. Coordinating with national rescues such as Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and Tracy's Dogs to gain acceptance of the animals and arrange transport. Every city animal control should be so lucky as to have a "Christie". Her facility is very much in need and deserving of this grant. it will be money well spent! Bill S.

i took in two stray dogs to the Kirby Animal Shelter that have been in my neighborhood for over a month now .. one with a broken leg. Christi took these poor little guys in even thought she was already full to capacity. no place else was willing to take these guys b/c they were either too full, wanted $ to take them or only took certain breeds. i'm so thankful she opened up her doors to them b/c otherwise i'm not sure what i would have been able to do with them. i offered donations and volunteer time but mainly what she asked for was for me to vote for her to win this grant & to spread the word. well, i've done that & i've gotten a few more votes for her, and i'm going to keep trying for the next couple days. thank you SO MUCH, Christi! i really hope the Kirby Animal Shelter is able to win this grant b/c i know they can do so much with it!

This shelter is run by one employee! Here in South Central Texas the temperature hits 100 degrees frequently. The shelter would love to use the money to aircondition the facility. Please help us.

I rescue dogs from this shelter from time to time. I would like to see more resources here. I think the money should go toward hiring a part time kennel hand. Some one to come in and clean. One person can't do it all. Trust me I know.

I have a dog that was rescued from the shelter . He is my best friend. He was orginally for my husband who was a Vetern. Him and that dow (Oreo) would just sit and enjoy eachothers company . Now that my husband has passed away I am all this dog has, I am so thankfull that Christi saved him from the streets . He is my constant companion and I love him dearly. I know that if he ever got lost and she found him , he would be iin good hands. Thanks Christi for all you have done, all you do and all the good you continue to create .

My grandson did some community service by volunteering at this shelter and came away from the experience thoroughly i mpressed by the people who work (& volunteer) at the shelter that he now has our whole family contributing by saving papers, linens etc. We have all been impressed by Christy and the others and their sense of mission to help the lost and abandoned animals of Kirby.

The Kirby Animal Shelter has improved SO MUCH! It went from a fenced in 15x15 yard to an actual dog park. My friends dog was lost while I was taking care of her and unfortunately had to visit the "pound" to retrieve her. I was very surprised when i walked into the brand new kennel they have for the pets. It was VERY CLEAN! Driving by now, seeing the fast improvements of the shelter is great to see! Thank you for everything you have done to help take care of our pets! You're a great asset to our community!

I have watched Christi do amazing things with both animals and with people. She is a motivator. She is a teacher. She inspires. She cares. She is a hard working, detail oriented , amazing person . She has a heart of gold and she shows it every day . This lady hand picks names for every single homeless animal that goes through there. She shows love and gives time to every thrown out , unloved , discarded and unwanted creature that get's dumped on her door step. She makes space in her shelter and her heart for every forgotten and deserted animal she finds. Her loyalty to her job is ferocious and I would be on her team any time. The money will help Christi to continue to accomplish great things !! I hope she wins .

Kirby Animal Shelter is doing great things! After all, how many can say that in a whole year, not one single animal was put down for space reasons? The grant from winning this contest would allow this shelter to save more lives and as well ease the financial strain they, like many, are facing. Thank you Christi for all your hard work. Because of you, many lives have been saved, many have been given a 2nd chance. There is much to be done, but with this grant which hopefully the shelter will win, you will get those great things done!

My dog got out after a bad storm and was lost. I looked everywhere and I finally found him at the Kirby Animal Care Services a few days later. It was nice to see my buddy taken care of and you can see the staff had a special place for every one of the displaced pets there. They do so much with so little. If any organization would take the grant and make exponential impacts in these animals lives it is Kirby Animal Care Services. They Care!

I worked with Christi for several years at her previous employment. I have seen her professionalism and caring heart in action. She is working hard to get Kirby Animal Care Services back on track but with a small budget she is struggling.. The PurinaOne beyOnd grant would help her to get and maintain quality care for unwanted or stay animals..

KIRBY SHELTER IS THE STUFF!! THEY MAKE A SMALL TOWN SHELTER SO BIG IN THIS AREA!!! THIS WOMAN WHO RUNS THIS SHELTER DOES SO MUCH I AM A FIREFIGHTER FOR KIRBY AND WE RESPONDED TO A DOG WITH ITS FOOT STUCK IN THE DRAIN AND THIS LADY OFF DUTY AND A HOUR AWAY CAME AND HELPED OR I SHOULD SAY SHE DID RESCUE THIS DOG WITH OUT HER THE DOG WOULD HAVE BEEN STUCK AND WE MAY NOT OF GOT IT OUT WITH OUT IT BEING INJURED SO IF ANY ONE DESERVES THIS ITS THE CITY OF KIRBY SHELTER!!!!!

This is a great shelter to support. One woman (Christie) accomplishes so much in the San Antonio area community on a shoestring budget and can REALLY use this financial support!!. I used to work for a shelter and she would bring animals to us... and we would give her bowls, bedding, whatever we could spare. She truly cares and makes a difference in so many lives. Please spread the word and vote for Kirby!!!

Kirby animal shelter NEED this win!!! Christie has been struggling to stay afloat and to keep KAS as close to a no kill shelter ad possible. Who wants to put a perfectly good animal to sleep because of space??? I help voulenteer once a month at the low cost vaccine drives but even those are starting to slow a bit. All the profits from those drives go to the shelter. Please vote for Kirby, I gave never met a women more dedicated in doing the right thing than Christie. She's truly an angel and voice of the animals.

Christie has single handedly caused a massive change in this shelter and saved the lives of 800++ animals in just one year. Turning a high kill shelter into one that has not put down an adoptable animal for space reasons is nothing short of a miracle in this area. The San Antonio area (which includes Kirby) has one of the worst stray problems in the nation, so saving animals here is particularly challenging. The person who runs the shelter, Christi, performs miracles evey day to save all the animals that she does. This grant would be a huge help in continuing her efforts!
