What makes this shelter great?

:

Founded in June 2002, AHS takes in and cares for abused, neglected and abandoned animals — especially those scheduled for euthanasia at other shelters. Once rehabilitated and ready, they are carefully matched with prospective adopters and placed in loving homes. Over 20,000 pets have been adopted from Animal House Shelter. AHS has had numerous newspaper articles written about them, foster families and why someone should adopt from a shelter. They are open 7 days a week 365 days a year. On any given day you will find individuals their to adopt, volunteer and be educated (scout troops). AHS staff takes the time to work with each and every person. In order for them to continue with this work they are in need of funds. I strongly believe that this shelter is your winner. Thank you for providing the opportunity to participate in this contest.

We are a childless older couple who really enjoy travel and the freedom of our lifestyle so making the decision to adopt our furry baby was not made easily or quickly. We were both surprised and impressed by how thorough AHS is with their adoption process. After filling out all the paperwork it didn't take them long to match us with our beautiful girl Sophie (aka Marcy). Sophie was the light and love of our life for 5 years before a sudden terrible illness took her from us. Naturally, the loss was so devastating and heartbreaking that I told my husband we are never getting another dog because there was no way I could live through that again. Well, two weeks later we were back at AHS where we were once again matched with our handsome boy Bear. He has been the new love and light of our life for the last 2 years and, hopefully, will be for many more to come. AHS is not just an animal shelter and adoption agency, they are guardian angels and matchmakers of the highest caliber!

Hi Lisa! Did Bear have siblings named Jessie, Brownie and Rico? I fostered the Mom, Cami and helped deliver her litter. Just wondering if this was the same Bear. Jen (ahsfostermom@gmail.com)

We adopted our adorable Trixie from AHS on May 28th, 2012. She was our second rescue and we had heard such wonderful things about AHS that we drove down from Wisconsin to see if the shelter would be a good fit for our family. They were so helpful in matching us with the right dog... and Trixie makes our family complete to be sure!

We adopted our beagle/daschund mix named Zoey from Animal House almost one year ago. She is a distemper survivor, which is rare. Her previous owners also neglected to keep up with the flea medication, but the staff and volunteer vets took great care of her before we even met her. She is now healthy and happy in her new home. We all love her very much and think life was really boring before she came to live with us! The world needs more shelters like Animal House that take time to care for each animal. The volunteers clearly loved her very much, which helped her get used to us quickly.

When we adopted 6 month old kittens, Lando and Kenya (aka Basil and Imogene), Basil was Mr. Personality and immediately made himself at home. Imogene was well behaved, but skittish--wouldn't let anyone get near her. About a month after we adopted them, she jumped into bed with us, started purring, and has been like velcro ever since. The two groom one another, play hide and seek and nap together--who needs the movies when they're around to provide the entertainment. Knowing that Imogene was slated to be euthanized in Alabama, and was scooped up by a volunteer who knew AHS would take her even if no one else would makes me so grateful that AHS exists. And everyone at AHS was so helpful, friendly and patient--during the adoption process and later when I had dietary questions about Basil. I'm so glad they do what they do, and I'm very grateful for our two furry comedians.

We adopted both of our wonderful cats Ben (formerly Edward) and Reggie from AHS. They are the sweetest little boys and were so well taken care of by the staff and volunteers at AHS before they came into our home! They bring so much joy into our lives and we could not imagine life without both of them! Thanks to AHS these kitties got a second chance at life and make us smile every day!

Our luxurious brown mackerel tabby cat, El Magnifico, began his life as James at AHS. We adopted him at six months of age in early 2006. Since then he has grown into the sweetest, funniest and most loving little cat we've ever owned. AHS is a fine, well-run organization that goes out of its way to make sure placements are successful. We could not imagine life without our now seven year old furry son. Thank you!

We adopted our dog Jax (now known as Pogo in our home) on 12/26/2012 and we appreciate the patience of the staff in the adoption process. Pogo (Jax) we were told had not been seen by many potential adoptive families and was very skittish when we met him. While our children (19, 22 & 24) who were with us during the interview process had concerns over his lack of interaction (perhaps understandable since we had recently lost our other family member (Snoopy) from an illness) my wife and I saw something special in Pogo (Jax) that drew us to him. We knew he was going to need special attention and we were prepared and committed to giving it to him. We are very pleased to say that after 8 months Pogo is well adjusted and seems to be at home with his new family. I want to thank the staff at AHS for their efforts in introducing us to Pogo. The day we showed up (day after Christmas) was extremely busy, but that didn't deter the staff from spending time with us to get introduced with our new family member. We are very grateful to the AHS staff that we were able to meet Pogo and welcome him into our family, Thank you!

Our family cannot thank Animal House Shelter enough, we wouldn't be complete w/o newly adopted cat. I cannot imagine our family without our beloved Lilly. Animal House Shelter is truly phenomenal, the love and care they provide animals is like no other.

We adopted Juliet, our beautiful calico cat, from Animal House Shelter in July 2011. She is doing well and is very happy in our home. She loves our older male cat and follows him around constantly. She enjoys looking out the window and watching the birds at our bird feeder. She is a very sweet and gentle cat who likes being picked up and carried. Thank you to Animal House Shelter for saving her. She had been a feral cat before they took her in to one of their foster homes.

We adopted Bubbles here at AHS! He is a 5yr old Rat Terrier mix. We volunteered for them at one event and we all fell in love with him. My grandma fell in so much love with him she was carrying him around the whole day! When we wen't to go and adopt him we brought two of our other rescued dogs and they all gotten along great! But just recently we lost our 3yr old Pointer mix named Bebe from an un explained and un treatable system that he had. The docture said to my family and I that he had severe Anemia and needed a blood transvusion and even then it only might of happened in an hour or a day but it wouldn't help him because he would have gone in the same spot he was in the 1st place. We could have spent millions of dollars and it wouldn't help his problem it would only add to his pain and suffering. But it was so horrible to watch him on the table and he didn't go once so the docture had to have to put in another cathethar and then they put in another one in him to humanly euthanize again! No matter what he was an very healthy dog with our other 2 dogs we have in out house hold and he loved life. But to see him go through this and there could be many reasons why this happened but no matter how many things we did we couldn't save him. Run away with Queenie baby boy♥ you were so young and was my dog please know you will always have a special place in my heart always and forever♥. Now we have our two rescued dogs from AHS Potato now named Rosie shes a 10 month yr old Doberman/Greyhound blend and is a doll to have with Bubbles. AHS is an awesome shelter and they always will help out human and creature in kind.

We lost our beloved Maggie, a Lab mix from a local shelter, in March of 2011 after sixteen beautiful years. It took several months before my husband and I were ready to think about adopting another dog. I found Animal House Shelter online at the beginning of August 2011, and we decided to take a look at the facility to determine if it was a place that we could be connected with. Our "taking a look" (famous last words) that day ended with adopting Sid, whom we renamed Finn. We were so impressed with the sincerity and generosity and spirit of the people who helped us and with the way the shelter worked. Thank you, AHS, for Finn and for all that you do!

Animal house Shelter is a wonderful shelter. i adopted my 2 Russian Blue cats from them and they are wonder pets. These people do so much for animals and have now become my hero's each and everyone of them. They find all kinds of ways to raise money and take in so many dogs and cats that are going to be put down and somehow they find temporary and permanent homes for as many as they can. I also see that besides myself that have a lot of support from the local community in our area. Because of all the animals that they have helped they have a lost list of items that they need besides money to keep things running and 1 year of food who be such a big help and greatly appreciated. i tell everyone that I know that if they have any room in their hearts and home and are looking for a pet please please check out the animals at AHS. Please consider them when deciding whom to give the food to they certainly deserve it. Thanks Diane Brooks Crystal Lake, IL

AHS is a very nice shelter and deserves to win. I adopted my dog about a year ago and she is such a good dog. It's amazing how much a little care can turn around a dog that was so skinny and afraid of people. Now she is in her element, loving and living life. She is definitely a pampered pooch, and she deserves it. Thank you AHS!

I've adopted 2 cats from AHS in the last two years, and can't imagine my life without them. They brighten my day and keep me company while my boyfriend travels for work. It was hard to pick from all of the cats and kittens at first, but the volunteers helped us when we wanted advice and gave us plenty of time play with and get to know our new family members before taking them home. I am overjoyed to vote for them to receive this grant to keep rescuing animals and finding them the loving homes they derserve.

Two weeks after we lost our beloved 10yr old yellow lab Jax to cancer, I asked my son if he was ok. He said he was fine but I knew he wasn't. He wasn't smiling and was just mopey. He was only 10yrs old when we got Jax and was dealing with his first experience with having to put an animal to sleep. So we decided to look into getting another dog. We looked online, went to the pet stores but could not agree on a dog. So we looked on the AHS website and found Mack a whippet sharpei mix. My son says to me can I go see him. I said sure, i'm goin to the gym. Five minutes later he calls and says when are you going to be done working out?? I knew then we would be bringing him home. His laid back personality works well with our 9yr old. He loves to burrow under the blankets with me and is such a lover! He was our first dog we ever got from a shelter and now any dog I ever have will be a shelter dog!

We fostered our wonderful little Libby lab-mix and fell in love with her. The shelter made fostering so easy and they were so helpful. Our little pup came with toys, blankets, food and we had nursing care available to her. After 4 days with our little charge, we decided to adopt her. This shelter puts love and care into every animal they rescue. They are so deserving of this award and would put all of the money to good use.

Animal House is our go-to shelter when we are looking for a new friend. They all really care about the animals and the animals seem to have good lives during their time in the shelter. We got the love of our life there, a kitten named Fiona that we renamed Monroe. She's the best cat ever! We also recently adopted our dog Knox from AHS and while he takes a lot more patience, we are thankful that AHS found him after he was in and out of other shelters and that we could try to give him a good home. This shelter helps match people with their best friends every day and they could really use the money!

After having to put down 2 cats within 9 months due to illnesses, our home was too quiet. We visited several shelters, but none compared with Animal House Shelter. AHS had the foster parent talk with us, they let us play with the 2 kittens we were considering to make sure they would get along with each other and with us, and they showed compassion for what they do. Our lives are enriched by Smoky (originally Allison) and Bandit (originally Peeta). The make our family complete. Thank you AHS!

We were looking for a second cat, one who would get a long with our current cat, but not annoy her constantly. We weren't looking for a kitten. We went to AHS one evening, but were there right before they closed, so left without a cat. We went back the next day, and I saw Elsa. Elsa was just picked up from a kill shelter and was scheduled to be euthanized. She is a tripod and was only 6 months old when we adopted her. I saw her, picked her up and fell in love. My husband was still looking at the cats, but Elsa had already decided she was adopting me.
Thank you AHS for saving Elsa!

It was our lucky day when my sister suggested we check out AHS. We had already decided on a more mature dog versus a puppy. We had seen our Candy on the AHS website and she was the second dog we "tried out" with a walk on their grounds. We both fell in love with her right away and she has been the light of our lives ever since. We are grateful that AHS took her in and we endeavor to do little things for the shelter in gratitude. They are always thrilled to receive items on their list, and my husband donated his sign making skills for another sign on their property. We hope all the dear little animals at AHS find their forever homes. I tell anyone looking for another "best friend" to check out Animal House.

AHS is awesome! I adopted a terrier in '07 and can't imagine life without her. The work AHS does made me want to be a part of it & I've been volunteering ever since. Everyone is great, very nice & always so grateful for my time or donations. So many people have such great things to say about the dogs too- the people that work with them to get them ready for adoption are amazing.

My husband and I planned on adopting a dog we picked out from another shelter but when we arrived we were put in a position of competing with another couple and ended up not bringing a dog home. I was devastated so my husband brought me to AHS after viewing a litter of pups online. The shelter went out of their way to bring in the pups from a foster home for me to see my heart melted and we brought two pups home Frito and Faith which we renamed Cosmo and Trixie they have been with us over a year now and I have never once regreted not bringing home that first pup.AhS went above and beyond to help me bring my twins home and I will never forget them for that!
